Writing: I can use high frequency words in my writing

Hayze enjoyed reading the story "Monkey Puzzle". At writing time, he choose a picture of the Mummy and baby monkey from the story, and he wrote a sentence about it. He referred to our Word Wall, found the word "and" and copied it into his book to make the phrase "Mum and baby". This is great work Hayze! Let's continue to find other small words like "is", "a" and "the" to add to your writing.

Maths: I can recall addition facts to 10

Hayze is very excited about his maths learning at the moment and is working well towards achieving this target. Here he is at the whiteboard, completing the number sentences for all the different ways to make 10 and then later on working with Paula, using counters to support his understanding and eventual recall of those addition facts. Fantastic work Hayze!

Spelling new words

Writing: I can identify middle sounds in words and link to letters for spelling

We did lots of talking and writing about our Mums in class this week. Hayze made his Mum a beautiful Mothers Day photo frame card and some yummy chocolate truffles. At writing time, he came up with two awesome sentences to describe his Mum: "My Mum is worried" and "My Mum is kind". Fabulous work! Hayze used our word wall to help with the high frequency words and using his knowledge of letters and sounds to identify and write the "n" sound in "kind". We will continue to work on sounding out middle sounds in different words in all of Hayze's writing.

How do you feel?

IEP: I  can use emotion words to communicate my feelings

Hayze is learning to use words rather than actions/behaviour to express himself. Here he is practicing using emotion words at circle time. The next step for Hayze is for him to describe his feelings incidentally and then select an appropriate way to manage his negative emotions, for example, if he expresses being frustrated, choosing to go outside and take 5 deep breaths to calm down. We are continuing to support this skill at school using visual aides.

The Counting King!

Maths: I am learning to skip count in 2s, 5s and 10s, up to 100.

Hayze loves to count to big numbers and is enjoying noticing and learning the patterns when skip counting in 5s and 10s. He can use the Numicon number shapes as visual cues to help him count in 10s to 100. Go Hayze!

The next step is for him to recognise the even number patterns when counting in 2s.
