Here is Hayze helping with the calendar at circle time. He was able to say that 23 comes after 22 and before 24 when filling in the date box, without any guidance from an adult or visual support- AMAZING! Target achieved! The next step is for Hayze to recall doubles.

Spelling words
Writing: I can identify middle sounds in words for spelling
In this activity, Hayze is working on identifying the middle sound in CVC words, like 'bag' and 'map'. He is able to do this during group phonics sessions when we play the word machine game on the interactive whiteboard. This was his attempt to try to do it independently and he was indeed able to hear, say and write the middle "a" sound in 'bag', all by himself. Very good work Hayze! The next step is for you to identify middle sounds in your independent writing activities :)

Helping Hands!
Thanks Hayze, for helping me to load the dishwasher today. I like the way you turned the bowls and cups around so that fit nicely and weren't all piled on top of each other. I hope you're just as helpful at home ;) You are a superstar!
How do you feel today?
IEP: Hayze will express his emotions and describe why he feels that way
Hayze is telling his friend Connor that he feels happy today. When I asked him why, he said "it's going to the gym!" It was lovely to see Hayze beginning to link his feelings with actions and experiences; the next step is for him to use words effectively to describe his negative emotions.

Keeping it quiet
IEP: I can use my inside voice in class
Hayze, you understand that when the arrow sits on the red side of the "noise-o-meter", that you need to use a quieter speaking voice. It was lovely to see you use the noise-o-meter independently today- this shows that you understand when you are using your inside voice.

Skip counting
Maths: I can skip count in 2s, 5s and 10s
Hayze practiced skip counting in 2s by filling in the missing numbers (even, every other number) on a 100-square. He made it all the way to 100! Fab work Hayze! The next step is for you to count in 2s, without using a visual support.
Listen up!
Speaking: I can follow instructions with 3 key words
At the art table, Hayze and Cody worked on painting apples for our letter "a" display. I gave Hayze the instruction: "paint the big apple green". When I returned a while later, here he was painting the large apple green. Well done Hayze, great listening! The next step is for Hayze to follow instructions that form part of his daily routine, to help him operate more independently in class.

Writing: I can use high frequency words in my writing
Hayze enjoyed reading the story "Monkey Puzzle". At writing time, he choose a picture of the Mummy and baby monkey from the story, and he wrote a sentence about it. He referred to our Word Wall, found the word "and" and copied it into his book to make the phrase "Mum and baby". This is great work Hayze! Let's continue to find other small words like "is", "a" and "the" to add to your writing.

Maths: I can recall addition facts to 10
Hayze is very excited about his maths learning at the moment and is working well towards achieving this target. Here he is at the whiteboard, completing the number sentences for all the different ways to make 10 and then later on working with Paula, using counters to support his understanding and eventual recall of those addition facts. Fantastic work Hayze!

Spelling new words
Writing: I can identify middle sounds in words and link to letters for spelling
We did lots of talking and writing about our Mums in class this week. Hayze made his Mum a beautiful Mothers Day photo frame card and some yummy chocolate truffles. At writing time, he came up with two awesome sentences to describe his Mum: "My Mum is worried" and "My Mum is kind". Fabulous work! Hayze used our word wall to help with the high frequency words and using his knowledge of letters and sounds to identify and write the "n" sound in "kind". We will continue to work on sounding out middle sounds in different words in all of Hayze's writing.

How do you feel?
IEP: I can use emotion words to communicate my feelings
Hayze is learning to use words rather than actions/behaviour to express himself. Here he is practicing using emotion words at circle time. The next step for Hayze is for him to describe his feelings incidentally and then select an appropriate way to manage his negative emotions, for example, if he expresses being frustrated, choosing to go outside and take 5 deep breaths to calm down. We are continuing to support this skill at school using visual aides.

The Counting King!
Maths: I am learning to skip count in 2s, 5s and 10s, up to 100.
Hayze loves to count to big numbers and is enjoying noticing and learning the patterns when skip counting in 5s and 10s. He can use the Numicon number shapes as visual cues to help him count in 10s to 100. Go Hayze!
The next step is for him to recognise the even number patterns when counting in 2s.

Independent Reading
Literacy: use pictures in a text to gauge meaning
Hayze read to himself at choosing time. He choose the big book "Good Boy Andrew" and even though he could read the words easily, he also looked at the pictures and described them in his own words ("Andrew's Mum is feeling happy with him").
